Nearly 300 Godalming and Farncombe residents packed into the Borough Hall and the Council Offices on Thursday 23rd January for the launch of the Godalming Neighbourhood Plan.
Neighbourhood Plans were introduced by the 2011 Localism Act and aim to give local communities a greater say in how their area develops.
The meeting, organised by Godalming Town Council, discussed how residents can get involved with shaping the future of their community.
Working Groups will now be set up to discuss issues such as housing, infrastructure, community facilities and employment.
Cllr. Jane Thomson, who is leading the Town Council's Working Group, reported: "It was great to see both the Borough Hall and the overflow room packed out on Thursday evening. What better way to start the planning process than to begin with the knowledge and expertise of local residents."
