Waverley Councillors in Godalming have condemned proposals from the Waverley Borough Council Administration which would close most of the main car park in the Town Centre and make it available for a housing development.
Cllr Peter Martin said, “Crown Court car park in Godalming has some 300 parking spaces, and this is 60% of all the publicly provided parking in the town. It serves the shops, restaurants, the Parish Church, a Primary School and other facilities for both residents and visitors. I profoundly disagree with the proposal from the LibDem led Coalition at Waverley to remove 200 to 250 spaces from Crown Court car park. I further object to a proposal to build a multi-storey car park at the Waverley Council HQ on the edge of the Godalming Conservation Area and overlooking the Lammas Lands”.
Godalming serves an area around the town including villages like Milford, Witley, Hascombe and Chiddingfold. The loss of easy to use and accessible car parking space will make it difficult for these residents as well as those living in Godalming to go into the town for shopping or leisure and will be damaging to the retail sector in the town.
Cllr Martin added this message to Waverley Council “Hands off our car parks”.
